In-house jewelry designer Alice Gershowitz has easy-to-follow instructions for how to create molds with reusable molding compound ComposiMold® PowerMold, a 100% biodegradable, non-toxic thermoplastic.

: : : Materials : : :

  • Molding compound, ComposiMold PM (PowerMold), thermoplastic, brown
  • Microwave or double boiler
  • Holding container
STEP 1
Remove lid from the ComposiMold® PowerMold reusable molding compound container then place into a microwave.
STEP 2
Heat the molding compound in its container according to manufacturer's instructions. Until you know how the molding compound works with your microwave, it is recommended to heat in 15 second increments until it is completely melted.

Note: Be careful not to heat too much as the container could melt.

Slowly stir the molding compound to make sure it is melted all the way through and evenly heated.

Repeat until the compound has a viscous consistency.
STEP 3
Spray the entire surface of the item to be molded with anti-stick solution.

If the item has a flat side, place it into a small holding container flat side down and pour the molding compound into the container until there is at least 1/2 inch of excess compound covering the item.

If the item does not have a flat side, prop it up in the holding container using polymer clay or suspend it from a string so it dangles inside of the holding container then fill the container with molding compound until there is at least 1/2 inch of excess compound covering the item.
STEP 4
Let the molding compound cool and set at room temperature, in a fridge or in a freezer.

Note: Do not use water to cool as it will dissolve the molding compound.
STEP 5
Remove the mold from the holding container.

To remove the flat-sided object from its mold, gently bend the mold around its edges until it is released.

To remove the suspended object from its mold, cut the mold in half from top to bottom then carefully peel away from the cast.

Tip: PowerMold molding compound can be reheated and strained to remove any unwanted particles and used again later.
